ELEXIS Association
The Dutch Language Institute (INT) was a partner in ELEXIS, a European Union’s Horizon 2020-2022 project that involved the development of an infrastructure for e-lexicography. To guarantee the durability and sustainability of the infrastructure, the ELEXIS Association was founded. The main aim of the association is to organize and coordinate lexicography-related activities and NLP activities, insofar as they are relevant to lexicography. The biennial eLex (electronic lexicography in the 21st century) conference is organized under the auspices of the ELEXIS Association. The INT is a member of the association and Carole Tiberius is the Deputy of the President of the ELEXIS Association.
European Language Data Space
The European Language Data Space (LDS) has been officially appointed by the EU to develop a European data platform and data market to facilitate the accumulation, creation, exchange, use and reuse of multilingual and multimodal language data. Earlier initiatives such as the European Language Resource Coordination initiative (ELRC) and the European Language Grid (ELG) provided the foundations for this project. The INT is the national point of contact for the European Language Data Space.
IMPACT Centre of Competence
The INT serves as chair of the IMPACT Centre of Competence. This is a not-for-profit organization, comprising public and private institutions, with the mission to make the digitization of historical printed text “better, faster, cheaper.” It provides data, tools, services and expertise in the fields of document imaging, language technology and the processing of historical texts. Since 2019, the IMPACT Centre of Competence has also been a CLARIN Knowledge Centre and organizes the DATECH conferences. Work relating to digitization that is carried out as part of CLARIAH+ is completed in collaboration with the Centre.
Nederlands/Vlaams Platform Taalbeleid Hoger Onderwijs
The INT also collaborates with the Nederlands/Vlaams Platform Taalbeleid Hoger Onderwijs (Dutch/Flemish Platform for Language Policy in Higher Education), a platform that facilitates the exchange of knowledge and experiences. By sharing and shaping knowledge, the Platform aims to contribute to the initiation and further development of a broad language policy in higher education, especially in colleges of higher education in Flanders and the Netherlands. The INT started its collaboration with the Platform in 2020, working on projects such as “Nederlands als wetenschapstaal” (Dutch as a scientific language). In relation to this project, the INT will start preparing terminology lists for certain course components and make these available online. The institute is also committed to a project regarding Academic Dutch, which involves selecting academic vocabulary from course materials and providing relevant definitions.
AICoalition4NL
The AI Coalition for the Netherlands (AICoalition4NL) was formed in 2025, combining the strengths of NL AIC and AiNed to build a strong international AI position for the Netherlands. As a member of the work group NAIN (Dutch AI for the Dutch language), the INT is also involved in this initiative.
COST Networks – Universality, diversity and idiosyncrasy in language technology (Unidive, 2022-2026)
The INT takes part in the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) network UniDive (Universality, diversity and idiosyncrasy in language technology). The main aim of this COST Action is to research how language technology can be improved by focusing on universality, whilst simultaneously monitoring the status of language diversity to prevent the exclusion of endangered languages or languages with fewer means from the digital world. The INT is active within two work groups (Corpus Annotation and Lexicon-Corpus Interface). Within UniDive, the INT collaborates on the annotation of multiword expressions in accordance with the PARSEME guidelines with the aim of establishing a PARSEME corpus for Dutch.
European Network on Lexical Innovation (ENEOLI, 2023-2027)
The INT takes part in the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) network ENEOLI (European Network on Lexical Innovation). The main aims of this network can be summarized as follows: 1) Defining a common multilingual core terminology for lexical innovation; 2) Identifying and presenting digital methods and instruments that are used to identify and explain lexical innovations in European languages; 3) Conducting comparative studies into lexical innovations in European languages, paying special attention to borrowings and their equivalents; 4) Offering specific training in neology to translators, editors, journalists, technical writers and teachers. Within ENEOLI, the INT has contributed to, among other things, the identification of internationally accepted lexicographical selection criteria for neologisms, keeping the institute’s own neologism workflow in mind.
