The Dutch Language Institute (INT) has a long tradition in academic lexicography. Our evidence-based lexicographic workflows start from the analysis of usage data as the basis for compiling concise yet high-quality knowledge about the form and meaning of words, their usage and the way they are combined.
Central lexical knowledge base
The INT develops and manages both historical and contemporary dictionaries. In recent years, the institute has invested in a central lexicon, named GiGaNT, with information about spelling and morphology for words in the Dutch language, ranging from historical Dutch (historic lexicon Hilex) to contemporary Dutch (modern lexicon Molex).
Historical dictionaries
The INT makes a number of historical dictionaries available through a single online search application. Together, these dictionaries describe the Dutch vocabulary from around 500 to 1976, and the Frisian vocabulary from 1800 to 1975. The INT also hosts the platform Etymologiebank, which contains the most important etymological publications on Dutch.
Dictionary of Contemporary Dutch
The Dictionary of Contemporary Dutch (Algemeen Nederlands Woordenboek or ANW) is a corpus-based, digital dictionary of contemporary Dutch in the Netherlands, Flanders, Suriname and the Caribbean. It describes words from 1970 to the present, more or less covering the period of post-war generations of adult language users.
Neologisms
The INT manages and develops the Dictionary of New Words (Woordenboek van Nieuwe Woorden or WNW), an online dictionary in progress that describes words (or word combinations) that have entered the Dutch language or gained a new meaning since the year 2000. Additionally, the institute manages Woordpeiler (Word Pollster), an online application that supports the analysis of neologisms.
Phraseology
Supporting the accessibility of phraseological information, the INT manages the project Woordcombinaties. This is a project developing an integrated lexicographical resource combining a collocation and idiom dictionary with a pattern dictionary. It was created to make phraseological information more easily accessible, so that idiomatic language can be more easily mastered.
