Lut Colman initially trained as a teacher of Dutch, English and history at the Instituut Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ten Doorn in Eeklo, after which she studied Germanic philology (Dutch and English) at Ghent University. She conducted her graduation research within the framework of valency grammar, with a final thesis on lexical and syntactic aspects of locative and directional complements in Dutch.
She has been a researcher/linguist at the Dutch Language Institute (INT) since 1990, with an expertise in phraseology. As a lexicographer, she worked on the Dictionary of the Dutch Language (WNT) until 2001, and from 2001 to 2016 she worked on the Dictionary of Contemporary Dutch (ANW). Since 2017, she has been the project manager and general editor of Woordcombinaties, a project integrating semantics and grammar.
