Dirk Kinable studied Germanic philology at the KU Leuven.

In 1986, he became a member of the editing team of the Dictionary of the Dutch Language (WNT), which details historic Dutch from 1500-1976. After the completion of this project in 1998, he became involved in projects aimed towards digital file enhancement and the automation of source date attribution. Starting in 2007, he contributed to the lexical description of contemporary Dutch as editor of the Dictionary of Contemporary Dutch (ANW). He has been focused on expanding the Centre of Expertise for Dutch Terminology (ENT) and its website since 2016. He is also interested in historical, medieval literature, the subject on which he obtained his doctorate at Leiden University in 1998. His publications concern lexicography and research into medieval texts from a lexicographical or terminological perspective.
