Kathy Rys studied Germanic philology (Dutch and English) at Ghent University. Her final dissertation shed light on the diglossic language situation in a Zeeland Flanders border town. After her studies, she worked as an editor of the Dictionary of the Flemish Dialects (Woordenboek van de Vlaamse Dialecten) at Ghent University, where she also wrote her doctoral thesis on the acquisition of dialect as a second language. Subsequently, she was employed by the University of Antwerp as a postdoctoral researcher, she contributed to research into the language use of descendants of nineteenth-century Zeeland immigrants in Brazil, and she wrote the 2017, 2019 and 2021 reports on the Condition of the Dutch Language for the Union for the Dutch Language.
She has been a linguistic researcher at the Dutch Language Institute (INT) since 2019. At the institute, she works on new chapters of the electronic version of the General Dutch Grammar (e-ANS) and the educational modules attached to these new chapters.
