Nicoline van der Sijs studied Slavic languages and literature at Utrecht University, and obtained her doctorate in Leiden in 2001, with her research on the age and origin of our words and meanings. She held the position of professor in historical linguistics of Dutch in the digital world at the Radboud University from 2013 until her retirement in 2021. In the 2021-2022 academic year, she was the King Willem-Alexander chair for Dutch studies in Luik. 

Starting in 2020, she joined the Dutch Language Institute (INT) as a senior researcher, working for the institute four days a week. Prior to this, she worked at the Meertens Instituut and Van Dale Lexicografie. At the INT, she worked on a variety of research projects, such as: ‘Spread the new(s). Understanding standardization of Dutch through 17th-century newspapers’ (NWO Open Competition SSH), ‘The rise of complex verb constructions in Germanic’ with Evie Coussé (PI) and Gerlof Bouma (funded by the Swedish Research Council), MacBERTh – Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers of historical English and Dutch (PI Lauren Fonteyn), Vertrokken Nederlands, The digital Pallas en Transcriptor 2.0 for Russian, Ukranian and Arabic. Following her official retirement in 2024, she continues to be involved with the INT as a guest researcher.

She led a large number of volunteering projects that have resulted in several hundred digital text editions, the transcription of 17th century newspapers accessible through Delpher, and databases such as etymologiebank.nl, the website gekaaptebrieven.nl, the electronic lexical database of Dutch Dialects and the Uitleenwoordenbank. She is the editor of Neerlandistiek, Trefwoord and Internationale Neerlandistiek and a regular writer for the magazine Onze Taal. In 2020, her book 15 eeuwen Nederlandse taal was awarded the Onze Taal/ANV prize for best language-related book. In 2001, she received the ANV-Visser-Neerlandia prize for her work, and she was awarded the Cultuurfonds Prize for the Humanities in 2006.
